Lab Director
Dr. Chavarria is the director of the Research on Addiction and Disparities (RoAD) Lab and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Western University. He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Florida State University, completed his pre-doctoral internship/residency at the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC), and completed postdoctoral fellowships at the UCMC and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. His research uses multiple methodologies to I) uncover risk-factors and mechanisms associated with the development of substance-related consequences and substance use disorders and II) develop and disseminate treatment protocols to reduce/eliminate problematic substance use behaviors, with a focus on marginalized groups.

Jason Chung
Jason is a PhD student in the clinical science and psychopathology stream. His research aims to identify and target processes that maintain and exacerbate high-risk behaviours (i.e., self-injury, substance use, suicide, and eating pathology), particularly among racialized and LGBTQ+ populations.

Karla Kovacek
Karla is in the first year of her Master’s in Clinical Science and Psychopathology program at UWO. She completed her BA in Psychology at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University). Her research interests include high-risk substance use in emerging adulthood and development of substance use disorders, with hope of informing prevention strategies and early interventions. In her free time, she enjoys baking, travelling, and photography.

Tristen Lozinski
Tristen Lozinski (she/her) is a first-year MSc student in Western’s Clinical Psychology program. She completed her Honours thesis and received her BSc (with Distinction) through the University of Victoria in 2022. Tristen’s primary research interest is the development of effective and equitable interventions for individuals experiencing substance use difficulties. Further, her favourite free-time activities are re-reading novels, as well as re-watching films and episodes of Schitt’s Creek.
